Texas Holdem Overview

Texas Holdem is the most popular poker variation today. No other game in the history of poker has attracted as many players or brought as much attention to poker as Texas Holdem. A part of its success has to do with Internet poker and televised tournaments, but Texas Holdem was quickly growing in popularity even before those two mediums brought increased attention to the game.

The thing that makes Texas Holdem so interesting is its perfect balance between information and a lack of information. Just enough cards are dealt face up and just enough are dealt face down that it creates a nice balance of information. You can get an idea of what someone has, but you never really know until the showdown.

That balance gives skilled players the opportunity to excel but it also doesn’t instantly doom the casual gamblers. Texas Holdem is a game of skill but short term variance keeps the gamblers coming back for more. There’s just enough uncertainty in the game that both sharks and fish alike can play in the same waters and enjoy themselves.

Texas Holdem uses a combination of community cards and hole cards from which the players can make their hands. Five cards are dealt face up in the middle of the table and each player receives two hole cards. The players can then use any combination of their hole cards and the community cards to make the best possible five card poker hand. The player with the best hand wins the pot.

Before Texas Holdem came along, the two biggest poker games were Seven Card Stud and Five Card Draw. Both games had their limitations – Five Card Draw had no revealed cards and Seven Card Stud was too difficult for the casual player. Texas Holdem came along and changed all that with its simple rules but potential for advanced strategy. It’s one of those games that they say “takes a minute to learn, but a lifetime to master.”

In any given casino or card room, Texas Holdem is almost always the featured game. In fact, it’s sometimes tough to find games other than Texas Holdem because so many players prefer Texas Holdem. Live Omaha tables can sometimes be found but even then that’s usually only at fairly large card rooms and casinos.
