Phil Hellmuth

Phil “The Poker Brat” Hellmuth is a talented poker tournament player who has a record 11 WSOP bracelets to his name. Phil is perhaps just as well known for his frequent outbursts and consistently poor attitude at the tables, hence the nickname “The Poker Brat.” Despite his questionable personality traits, no one can argue that Phil Hellmuth is one of the most skilled tournament players in the world.

Background

Phil Hellmuth was born in Madison, Wisconsin on July 16th, 1964 as the oldest of five children. He grew up in Wisconsin, where in elementary school he was best friends with the comedian Chris Farley. He then went on to attend the University of Wisconsin and got his first taste of poker there.

During his college years, Phil developed an interest in poker and learned everything he could about poker strategy. He earned a tidy little profit and eventually dropped out of the University of Wisconsin to pursue a full time career in poker. His poker career started slowly, but Phil stuck with it until he made his big break into the scene.

Poker Career

The big break that Phil had been looking for finally took place when he was just 24 years old. He joined the 1989 World Series of Poker and won the Main Event for a prize of $755,000. First place prizes have since increased by a long shot, but that was all Phil needed to get started.

At the time, he was the youngest player ever to win a Main Event championship at the World Series of Poker. This would be just one of several poker tournament records that the young Phil Hellmuth would eventually set. Since that first bracelet, Phil has played in tournaments all around the world and amassed an impressive fortune doing so.

Phil has won a total of 11 WSOP bracelets, cashed in the WSOP 75 times and reached 41 WSOP final tables in his career. These achievements are all unmatched to this day. In total, Phil Hellmuth has won more than $6,000,000 at the WSOP alone. His total live tournament wins, including other poker tournaments, exceed $11,000,000. If you combine that with all his merchandise, book deals and promotional videos, Phil Hellmuth has made quite a living out of poker.

The Poker Brat

No Phil Hellmuth bio would be complete without mentioning the various antics he has pulled at the tables over the years. Perhaps more than any other player out there, Phil Hellmuth has earned his nickname. He is especially known for berating players after suffering bad beats. A few of Phil’s most memorable lines include the following:

“If it weren’t for luck, I’d win ‘em all!” “I am the Jack Niklaus of poker, the Tiger Woods of poker, the Mozart of poker.” “I bet this guy can’t even spell poker!”

His talk at the poker tables is remembered by all who have the misfortune to sit with him. One time, Phil Hellmuth pushed it so far that he got into a fight with poker player Sam Grizzle. Phil later claimed the fight was a draw, but other sources say that Sam just punched Phil one time and ended the fight.

In any case, it’s clear the Phil is quite a character at the tables. Sometimes it’s hard telling if he’s serious or if he’s just a great self-marketer. After all, his reputation is known by nearly everyone who follows poker. Love him or hate him, you have to admit that Phil Hellmuth is one super talented poker player.
