Variations of Omaha Poker
Many poker players like to mix things up so it’s no surprise that several Omaha poker variations exist today. The basic rules of each variation are the same but a couple things have been changed to add extra depth to the game. The following Omaha poker variations are played often at both internet poker sites and at live card rooms.
If you live near a large casino or card room, you’ll probably see these Omaha variations on a regular basis. In other locations, you’ll have to play on the internet to see these variations. In fact, internet poker rooms are some of the best places to find real money Omaha games. A few of these variations aren’t well known so it can be difficult to find action at live tables.
Fixed Limit Omaha
Fixed limit Omaha is played with normal Omaha rules and fixed bet sizes. The players in fixed limit Omaha may only bet in multiples of the stated betting limits. For example, the players in a $1/$2 fixed limit Omaha game may only bet in multiples of $1.00 and $2.00. During the first two betting rounds, the smaller betting limit is used. During the last two betting rounds, the larger betting limit is in effect.
Pot Limit Omaha
Pot limit Omaha is probably the most popular Omaha poker variation. In pot limit Omaha, the players may bet any amount up to the current size of the pot. It’s very close to no limit Omaha except the players can’t randomly go all-in. This format is popular because it gives the players enough room to maneuver but prevents people from randomly going all-in. Of course, if two players want to get all-in, all they have to do is raise and re-raise each other.
No Limit Omaha
No limit Omaha is very rarely played because it gives the players an opportunity to go all-in before the flop and turn the game into a crap shoot. This is important because hand values aren’t as set in stone as in Texas Holdem. In Texas Holdem, certain starting hands are definitely stronger than others. That’s not so much the case in Omaha. If players could go all-in any time they wanted in Omaha, it would take a lot of strategy away from the game.
Omaha Tournaments
Omaha poker tournaments are popular because players can win a lot of money while risking only a single buyin. The players in an Omaha tournament all pay a single buyin and receive an equal amount of chips. The tournament then begins with normal Omaha rules and continues on until one player has all the chips.
Over the course of the tournament, the blinds slowly increase in size to keep things moving. As the blinds increase, it creates pressure on the players to get involved in more pots and earn more chips. As the tournament progresses, players are knocked out until only one person is left standing. The tournament then gives out prizes to the top finishers.
Omaha Ring Games
Omaha ring games (also called “cash games”) don’t cost anything to join and don’t have rising blinds. The goal in an Omaha ring game is simply to make as much money as possible. Unlike tournaments, ring games don’t progress down to a single player. The game continually runs and the players are free to come and go.
Omaha Hi-Lo
Omaha Hi-Lo (also called Omaha 8 or better) can be played in any of the above formats. The rules of Omaha Hi-Lo are the same as in normal Omaha except for the showdown. In Omaha Hi-Lo, each pot is split between the person who has the best poker hand and the person with the lowest poker hand.
Low hands in Omaha Hi-Lo must contain five cards that are ranked 8 or lower. Straights and flushes do not count against the hand. The best possible low hand in Omaha Hi-Lo is 5-4-3-2-A (aces count as low). The worst possible low hand is 8-7-6-5-4. Low hands are ranked starting from the highest card and working down. In the event of a tie, the win is awarded to the player who has the next-lowest card. For example:
8-4-3-2-A would beat 8-7-6-5-4 because the second-highest card in the first hand is lower than the second-highest card in the latter hand. This can continue all the way down the line to break any ties. If two hands tie all the way down, that half of the pot is split among those players.
