Omaha Poker History

What was once an obscure poker game has recently become one of the most popular in the world. In fact, Omaha poker is the second most played poker game after Texas Holdem. As more and more people learn to play Omaha poker, the game continues to grow every year.

The history of Omaha poker isn’t well documented because the game sort of slowly crept into the poker playing world. Nobody is really sure how, exactly, Omaha poker came to become one of the most popular poker variants today. There are theories about Omaha poker’s history, but nobody knows for sure how Omaha poker got its start.

Interestingly, it is widely believed that Omaha poker was not invented in Omaha, Nebraska. Some of the first Omaha games were played in Las Vegas in the early 1980s and that’s about as specific as we can get. Most likely, the game traveled from some other part of the country. Some sources believe it came from Chicago, others admit that they have no idea.

Texas Holdem Leads to Omaha

Many major poker works that were published in the early 1980s didn’t even mention Omaha Poker, even though it’s immensely popular today. From that, we can tell with some certainty that Omaha poker became a mainstream poker variant relatively recently. When Texas Holdem exploded in the early 2000s, Omaha experienced a similar surge as well.

Before Omaha poker became as popular as it is today, Texas Holdem and Seven Card Stud were the two biggest games. At the time, two different variations of Texas Holdem were played. One variation was played as it is today and another one required the players to use exactly two of their hole cards when making hands. This Texas Holdem variant was called “Omaha.”

When a new game came around that gave each player four hole cards, the name “Omaha” was used because this new game dictated that each player must use exactly two of their hole cards to make their hands. The other Texas Holdem variant died out and “Omaha” became the official name of the four-hole-card game that we know today.

One problem with tracking down the exact history of Omaha poker is that there are so many conflicting resources that claim to know the history of Omaha. On top of that, the game was never officially “invented” like some casino games. Instead, it slowly evolved from one poker variant to another until it became Omaha poker. It also doesn’t help much that poker has had to remain underground in many states throughout history thanks to anti-poker legislation.

In any case, Omaha Poker has become a dominant form of poker today. It’s main claim to fame is how action-packed the game is. Casual players love the game because they are rarely dealt a hand in which nothing is worth playing. Serious poker players love the game because it’s similar to Texas Holdem and is played poorly by many people. It wouldn’t be surprising if one day Omaha usurps Texas Holdem as the king of poker.
