Major Omaha Poker Events

The internet poker boom of the last few years has exposed millions of new players to Omaha poker. As more and more people learn how to play Omaha poker, more major Omaha poker events can be found – both online and live. Many of these events occur as part of large, multi-day poker tournament series.

Some of these major Omaha poker events have prize pools of several million dollars or more. Players who learn Omaha well can make a lot of money in these tournaments. One thing that really helps is that many poker players jump straight to Omaha from Texas Holdem without taking the time to learn the proper strategy for Omaha. As a result, you’ll find a lot of soft competition in these Omaha poker events.

World Series of Poker Omaha Event

The World Series of Poker (WSOP) is poker’s largest tournament series every year. The WSOP consists of more than 50 different poker tournaments that are held every year in Las Vegas. Although Texas Holdem is the main poker game at the WSOP, there are still several Omaha events every year.

The largest Omaha event is the $10,000 Pot Limit Omaha event. In last year’s WSOP, the Omaha event attracted 295 players and featured a prize pool of $2,773,000. The first place winner took home more than $679,000. Out of all the Omaha tournaments every year, this one is the biggest. Winners also receive a special WSOP bracelet.

Full Tilt Online Poker Series

Full Tilt Poker hosts the Full Tilt Online Poker Series (FTOPS) several times a year. Included in the event are several Omaha events. The biggest Omaha event of the series is the $100+$9 Omaha Re-buy event. In the latest FTOPS, the Omaha rebuy event had a guaranteed prize pool of $400,000.

This is one of the biggest online Omaha events you’ll find anywhere. The $400,000 guaranteed prize pool ensures that players who do well see a lot of money. At just $100+$9, it’s also one of the cheapest Omaha tournaments relative to its prize pool.

PokerStars World Championship of Online Poker

The World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP) is a major tournament series hosted every year at PokerStars. There are several Omaha tournaments with massive prize pools included in the series. In the 2009 WCOOP, the biggest Omaha event was the 6-max Pot Limit Omaha event. The prize pool was $906,000 and the first place winner took home more than $172,000.

The buy-in for this event is a hefty $2000+$100 but satellite tournaments are available to get you in for a lot cheaper. In addition to this tournament, the WCOOP also includes a few other Omaha events with their own six figure prize pools.

Titan Poker European Championship of Online Poker

Titan Poker started its own poker series a few years ago and named it the European Championship of Online Poker (ECOOP). This online tournament series isn’t as big as the two listed above but it still awarded nearly $5,000,000 last year.

There are several Omaha events included in the ECOOP and they all have $100,000+ prize pools. The largest Omaha event last year was the 6-Max Pot Limit Omaha with a $167,000 prize pool. The buy-in was $1,000+$60 and one re-buy was allowed. It’s an expensive tournament but all that means is that there are fewer players to fight against on your way up.
