Overview of Omaha Poker
Omaha Poker is closely related to Texas Holdem Poker and has benefited greatly from the success of Texas Holdem. The main difference between Omaha and Texas Holdem is that in Omaha Poker, each player gets four hole cards instead of two. As a result, big hands and large pots are more common. Texas Holdem may be the “Cadillac of poker,” but Omaha is an action junkie’s paradise.
Big draws are much more powerful in Omaha than in other forms of poker. Because each player gets four hole cards, there can be draws that are actually more likely to hit than to miss. When players get big draws to straights and flushes, more than half the remaining cards in the deck complete one draw or another.
From Texas Holdem to Omaha
Players who switch over to Omaha from Texas Holdem have to learn to be extra cautious. Big hands are more common and it’s easy to get in trouble with hands that would have been considered strong in Texas Holdem. A pair or two pair, for example, isn’t worth much in Omaha because there are so many stronger hands out there. Players who get attached to mediocre hands in Omaha lose their stacks quickly.
Out of all the poker variations out there, Omaha Poker is the second-most popular behind Texas Holdem. A large part of Omaha’s popularity is due to its similarity to Texas Holdem. The rules of both games are almost the same and the skills learned in Texas Holdem transfer nicely over to Omaha. There are still enough differences, however, to keep Omaha interesting.

In most poker rooms and at all internet poker sites, Omaha tables are available right alongside Texas Holdem. Omaha games don’t get as much action as Texas Holdem games but there are still enough Omaha fans that finding a game is rarely difficult.
