Overview of 7 Card Stud

Seven Card Stud is currently the third-most popular poker variant. It was once the most popular poker game of them all, but Texas Holdem crept up and stole that title over the last decade or so. The internet poker boom has kept 7 Card Stud alive and well, however, and exposed it to a whole new generation of poker players.

Seven Card Stud is the most well-known of the stud poker games. Unlike Texas Holdem, 7 Card Stud does not have community cards. In Stud, each player receives a total of 7 cards, with some of those cards dealt face up and some of those cards dealt face down. Each player then picks five of those cards to make the best possible poker hand.

The strategy for Seven Card Stud is significantly different than for Texas Holdem. Sure, the same hands still win, but that’s about it. In Seven Card Stud, there is a lot more information to keep track of. Players can’t just look at a board of community cards and know what all is out there. The players have to take note of the various cards dealt face up in front of each player.

Even though it has lost its status as the most popular poker variant, Seven Card Stud has a loyal following of poker enthusiasts. Many high stakes players like to add Seven Card Stud to their mix of games to keep things interesting. In small and low stakes games, the general level of play is very poor. Internet players are especially notorious for jumping right into Seven Card Stud games without really preparing themselves.

Finding Seven Card Stud Games

In order to find good Seven Card Stud games, it’s best to check first with the biggest internet poker sites. Smaller poker sites and live card rooms don’t have nearly as many 7 Card Stud players as some of the bigger sites like Absolute Poker and Full Tilt Poker. The largest poker sites have thousands of players online at all hours of the day.

For live play, it can be a little more difficult to find Seven Card Stud games. Large casinos often have Seven Card Stud tables and tournaments but smaller casinos tend to stick with Texas Holdem. Players who don’t live near a large casino can either play online or arrange their own home games that feature Seven Card Stud.

Most Seven Card Stud games are played only in fixed-limit format. The no-limit format doesn’t work well for Seven Card Stud because there are five different betting rounds. On top of that, the players really can’t tell much about how strong their hands are early on in the hand. By keeping 7 Card Stud in the fixed-limit format, the emphasis remains firmly on skill rather than on luck.

Strong Seven Card Stud players can do very well at the tables against inexperienced players. Many poker players agree that strong players in 7 Card Stud have a great advantage over weak players than strong Texas Holdem players have over weak Holdem players. Seven Card Stud takes a little longer to master but experienced players will tell you it’s well worth the effort.
